C
arlong’s pioneering series developed in response
to Jamaica’s completely integrated curriculum
for the first three years of primary school remains the
series of choice for teachers and students. The series is
organized around the curriculum’s focus questions and
emphasizes concept formation, content coverage, skills
development and vocabulary building.
To ensure comprehensive coverage of the curriculum,
there are five books for each year. In
Year 1
the students
are assisted in realizing who they are as individuals.
They look at their body as a whole, their family,
contents of their home and self as a student.
Year 2
books examine the organs and students learn
how to care for themselves. They also look at families in
general, basic needs and their communities.
In
Year 3
books, students learn about other body parts,
the satisfaction of needs beyond basic needs and about
the providers of goods and services. The students are
also led to relate to their environment, Jamaican culture
and the world at large. The material presented ensures
that students are prepared for the upper primary level
demands and the discrete subject approach in
Years 4-6.
