Publishing
elcome
to Carlong's Publishing Department where the utmost care is taken
in developing quality textbooks with relevant content, sound pedagogy
and creative design. Carlong has carved out its own niche in the
challenging educational book market. Growing through the years, Carlong's
textbooks have become the preferred choice of text in various subject
areas, recommended for use by Ministries of Education across the region,
CXC and other examination bodies, and a profitable inclusion on booksellers'
lists.
In the early publishing years, Carlong developed
the first comprehensive primary science and primary social studies series
that were designed specifically for the Jamaican curricula. Carlong
pioneered too, the first and only comprehensive secondary social studies
Reform of Secondary Education (ROSE) curriculum. These pioneering series
were all adopted by the Jamaica MOEYC, and distributed to schools across
the country.
In the continuing years, Carlong has systematically developed
and produced textbooks, activity books, teachers' guides, and supplementary
topic books in a wide range of subject areas. These supplementary books
have won widespread acclaim and approval for use in primary and secondary
schools.
Most notably, in recent times, Carlong has
developed the exciting, innovative new series Carlong Primary Integrated
Studies (CPIS), responding to the MOEYC's integrated curricula for
Grades 1, 2 and 3; and responding to the need for children's literature
that supports literacy development and promotes cultural awareness and
confidence, Carlong has developed the new Sand Pebbles Pleasure
Series (SPPS)- a collection of books featuring Caribbean life
and culture, expressed in short stories, novels, biographies and other
literary forms, for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years old.
As
educational publishers, Carlong undertakes considerable market
research, to determine the need for and focus of our texts, which must
conform to the content and pedagogical requirements of the curriculum,
as well as enhance teaching and learning. We prepare profiles of each
new publication and seek out and commission the most qualified and suitable
persons to write the books.
Under the leadership of Publishing Manager, Dorothy
Noel, Carlong's in-house publishing team comprises 11 persons.
Carlong utilizes and has honed the professional skills of a growing
cadre of commissioned authors (who are Caribbean teachers, educators and
creative writers); as well as free-lance editors, designers, type compositors,
who are well integrated into the publishing team.
