As partners in the education process, and as pioneering indigenous Caribbean publishers with a proud record of achievement, Carlong is committed to playing a dynamic role in national and regional development. This commitment to partnership and service is evident in Carlong's leadership in the development of the book industry in the region.
Carlong's Managing Director, Shirley Carby was the founding President in 1989 and President for several other terms, for the (BIAJ) Book Industry Association of Jamaica. This unique umbrella organization brings together all sectors of Jamaica's book industry to facilitate joint development initiatives, improved standards of service to the public, and a joint lobby group to Government on issues affecting the industry. Through the years, several persons from Carlong's management team have served on the BIAJ's Executive Board. Mrs. Carby has served in a consultative capacity in the establishment of a similar organization in Trinidad, the Book Industry Association of Trinidad and Tobago (BIATT).
Carlong, on behalf of the BIAJ, pioneered the establishment, and guides the management of the Jamaican Copyright Licensing Agency (JAMCOPY). JAMCOPY is a collective administrative society for the management of reprographic reproduction rights. Mrs. Carby also assisted in setting up the Trinidad and Tobago Reproduction Rights Organization and has played a leadership role in working with Government and international copyright organizations to promote and protect intellectual property rights in the region.
As a council member of the National Book Development Council, Shirley Carby has helped to formulate and organize the biennial Una Marson and Vic Reid awards for excellence in new works in adult and children's literature respectively. Carlong has also donated some of the awards and financed and managed the publication of some of the award winners.
In
2001 when the Caribbean Publishers Network (CAPNET) was established, Carlong
was one of the founding members. The CAPNET vision is to develop through
strategic networking and partnerships, a vibrant and viable publishing
industry in the Caribbean. The respect for Carlong's track record
of achievement and expertise have been brought to bear on the fulfilment
of the CAPNET mission via training, discussion and exposure to areas of
publishing, unique to the Carlong experience and facilitated by
various members of the Carlong team.
As a wholesale distribution operation, Carlong works very closely with our retail bookshop partners. We believe that retail bookshops are important cultural agents providing a vital service to the community. We assist their growth, development and service quality with training, business development advice, and effective customer service support.
Committed to supporting educational development at all levels, Carlong works closely with Ministries of Education, schools, teachers' colleges, the private sector, development and community organizations to develop curriculum-ready textbooks, strengthen teaching methodologies, improve student learning capacity, promote the reading habit and increase literacy development.
